To explore means to discover the new, innovative and contreversial. To see what others havent to do what others didnt. To explore means to be a vangaurd in the things you do.
For purposes of these photos, it portrays an art and just as any painting, it used what was available to capture the eye of the beholder, thus, it was manufactured and created resulting in the final product, the photographs.
