SCHOLAR: REASON AS IT PERTAINS TO SELF EXPRESSION

Reason is the faculty of the mind that is utilized to justify actions. Reason is a factor to be considered with regards to the basis of civility.  With reason, the societies of today have created bodies of legislation under the premise and respect for the rule of law.  Thus, it becomes important to understand how reason is created and what actually goes on in an individuals mind to be able to explain the political phenomenon occurring in society.  To delve into this matter, it is important to go back to Greece.  Ancient Greece was a place full of ideas and inspiration.  It was a place that birthed democracy.  Democracy essentially is composed of two words, “demos,” and “kratos.”  “Demos” refers to people and “kratos” refers to rule (National Geographic 2021).  Greece at that time was a place where sexuality was expressed freely.  “[Greece] was a society of great tolerance and lack of guilt.” (The Gaurdian 2009).  Further, “Nicholaos Stampolidis, director of the Museum of Cycladic Art, as according to The Guardian, he was “standing before a giant marble phallus [referring to it as a form of] balance."  On another note, Ellen Ordessen as according to Cosmopolitan states that, "the ideal Greek man was rational, intellectual and authoritative” (2016), however the smaller size according to her allowed the man to remain “logical”.  Today, there are males that publicly depict their flaccid penis, erect penis and semi erect or semi flaccid penis.  The depiction of a penis as it pertains to Ancient Greece depicts the cultural values of the individuals in question and further as according to previous the ability to reason and democracy thereafter.

In ancient India sex was practiced through “open sexual relationships, highly erotic sexual literature, paintings, and artworks (Medium 2020).  India is the place that created what is referred to as the “‘Kama Sutra”.  This is a book which depicts various positions of achieving sexual arousal and ejaculation is renowned for its creative approach to sex and intimacy.  India is the place where the largest democracy is implemented.

The Netherlands is a place that values rationale and reason.  It is the place for the deliberation of many issues that cannot be resolved through diplomacy.  This deliberation is what is known as “ratio decidendi”.  It is an educated approach to reason.  Ratio decidendi uses case law, precedents, previous decisions and verdicts – starre decisis, circumstantial evidence, expert witnesses amongst others to come up with the “motivation behind a legal decision” (Legal Dictionary 2021) in other words the “reason.”  What is intriguing about the said state is the fact that it is a place that pioneered various sexual policies.  Of note, is the red-light district where prostitutes are able to “work”.  Legislation was enacted in the country to legalize prostitution in 2000.  Further, this was the place that first implemented same sex marriage which was legalized in 2001.

Thailand is a place where it was a main factor for the creation of ASEAN.  In fact, without Thailand, it could be argued that such regulatory body was not possible.  ASEAN refers to the Association of South East Asian Nations.  It is a place where member states act cordially for the interest of the region.  They aim to solve issues via diplomacy through cooperation with the member states.  This state, is a haven for transexuals.  Thailand is a state that has enacted specific legislation to protect the sexuality of all its citizens.  This is done through Gender Equality Act B.E. 2558 which bans discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation (Human Rights Watch 2015).

In ancient Egypt, “sex was not taboo… the Egyptian religion was filled with tales of adultery, incest, homosexuality and masturbation.”  With regards to the matter at hand, Egypt is the place where the social contract became rule of law through books of authority such as The Book of the Dead.   Further, Egypt had a legal system which was furthered from Mesopotamia’s rudimentary “Code of Hammurabi”.  Regardless, in Egypt, the authority was the Pharaoh and the “Vizier [who] directed all administrative branches of the government” (Britannica 2021).  They were able to achieve social control of the empire through law.

With relation to the mentioned states, it becomes evident that there is a connection between the expression of sexuality and reason as per possible obiter dicta.  What is important to note is that the people’s ability to express themselves through such outlets as sex and intimacy resulted in their respective societies.  Self expression is very important to keep the individual balance of emotion.  According to psychology those that are inhibited or hold emotion inside without an outlet, are at risk for acting out in aggression, anger and or violence.  This is referred to as “pent- up anger” (Health Line 2021).  Which means that as it pertains to the mentioned states and their citizens, the ability to express their sexuality prevented such lack of balance in reason as it pertains to democracy.  In fact, when an individual keeps emotions bottled up inside it creates strong emotions which could impair his or her ability to reason and make equitable judgements.  Thus, expression of sexuality through such outlets as sex tapes is necessary to balance the individual emotion of individuals so that they may act with reason and in a manner that is considerate and equitable as evidence through the named states herein.  It is also important to note that sex tapes are not the only methods of expressing oneself however, it is a method by which shame can be conquered.  Thus, sex tapes play an important role for individual development as the individual manages themselves through their adulthood.
